Weather in Pleiku: best months to visit

Pleiku is driest from November to April. Month-by-month guide to rain, flowers and cold nights, with the best two weeks to go and what to pack.

By Rechecked

Which month gives you good weather, are the nights cold, and is the rainy season a problem? The dry season, November to April, is the easiest time to go. If you only get one trip, make it late October to mid-November, when the wild sunflowers and the gong festival fall in the same window. Below: a month-by-month table, then cold nights, the rainy season and Tết.

What the long-term numbers say

These are long-term averages for the Pleiku weather station, from Vietnam’s national building-climate standard, not a forecast.

January gets only 3 mm over 0.6 days, while August gets 476 mm over 27.4 rainy days, so in July or August assume any day can be wet. A year adds up to about 2,206 mm, within the 2,200 to 2,500 mm typical of Gia Lai’s western Trường Sơn side. March is the sunniest month at 277 hours against 128 in August, so for photos of hills and the volcano, the dry season gives far better light.

The day-night gap is widest in February and March, 13.1 degrees C, and narrowest in August, 6.1: a cold morning and a hot noon in the same day. Average humidity runs from 70.5% in March to 92.2% in August. The hottest day on record is 36.0 degrees C, in April. September is the foggiest month at 11.7 days, and thunderstorms peak in May at 12.6 days, so in the rainy season set out early at the volcano or Biển Hồ Lake and be back by afternoon.

Which season is best in Pleiku: choose by what you want to see

Pleiku has two clear seasons: rain from May to October, dry from November to April. Choosing a season here is choosing what you want to look at; the dry season is simply easier to get around.

For clear skies, we recommend the dry season; January and February have almost no rain. For flowers, time it: wild sunflowers are in full bloom for only two to three weeks from late October, so check they are out before you book flights. January and February are also when Gia Lai coffee flowers, white blossom covering the farms after the sunflower season. If you want red instead, come in the rainy season: red canna blooms from July to October, especially around Chư Đăng Ya volcano and Biển Hồ Lake.

If you can only pick one week, pick late October to mid-November: sunflowers, the gong festival and the start of the dry season. Flowers follow each year’s weather, so check a few days before you go.

How cold are Pleiku nights, and what to pack

Days in Pleiku are mild, but nights can drop a long way, and the coldest come at the end and start of the year.

The average low is 13.9 degrees C in January and 14.9 in December, and some years it has dropped to 5.6 in January and 5.8 in November and December. Compare 20.4 on May and June nights: a year-end trip needs a whole extra layer.

One light jacket for early mornings and evenings is enough for most dry-season trips. Around year-end, add a sweater, socks and gloves, especially for the volcano at dawn or an outdoor cafe in the evening.

Rainy season: week-long rain and early fog

Stuck with June, July or August? You can still go, but the rain can last a whole week, so leave a spare day and swap in an indoor stop from our Pleiku itinerary.

If you fly, do not cut it fine. Fog and sudden showers in early morning and late afternoon are common in Gia Lai; the ten-day forecast for Pleiku is on the national weather service. For getting into town, see Pleiku airport and coaches to Pleiku.

Tết, and what is on Saturday night

At Tết, Biển Hồ Lake is where visitors from inside and outside the province head, so expect crowds and go early in the day.

Outside Tết, spend a Saturday evening at the Weekend Gongs, 7 to 9 pm at Great Unity Square (Đại Đoàn Kết); they run from March to December.

Once you have a month

The Pleiku itinerary is already split day by day; in the rainy season just swap the hill climbs for stops in town. Where to sleep, by area, is in where to stay in Pleiku. Both sit in the things to do section, next to places like Biển Hồ Lake and Biển Hồ Chè.
