Pleiku’s sights fall into two groups: a few easy stops in and around town, and a second set that runs north along Highway 14. That split sets the plan. Day one stays in town, day two goes north to Biển Hồ Lake and the tea hills, and day three is the Chư Đăng Ya volcano. With one day, do day one; with two, add day two; with three, do all of it. Meals are slotted in between, with prices and closing times, because closing times are what force you to change the order.

Choosing a one, two or three day plan
Each extra day takes you further out, from the pagoda and village near the centre to the lake and then the volcano.
If one day is all you have, take day one: all three stops are close to town. If lakes appeal more than temples, go straight to day two; the two halves lie in opposite directions, so they do not combine well in one day. With three days, keep the order.
Rainy day? Keep the order but swap the outdoor stops for covered ones: Minh Thành Pagoda, open until 5 pm, and the museums around Great Unity Square, with a long coffee at The Quao, whose many plants suit a wet day. Move the tea hills and the lake to the next dry morning.
How far apart the stops are
Distances, so you can bend the plan:
| Leg | Distance and time |
|---|---|
| Centre to Minh Thành Pagoda | about 2 km |
| Centre to Biển Hồ Lake, on Highway 14 | about 7 km |
| Biển Hồ Lake to Chư Đăng Ya volcano | 20 km |
| Centre to Chư Đăng Ya volcano | about 30 km |
The pagoda, the village and the square sit within a few kilometres of the centre. The lake, the tea hills and the volcano follow one another to the north.
Day one: Minh Thành Pagoda, Plei Ốp village and the square
Day one stays in town. The pagoda opens at 7 am, while dry pho shops open much earlier, so breakfast comes first.
Day one morning: dry pho, then the pagoda

Start with phở khô (dry pho: noodles with a separate bowl of broth) at Phở Khô Gia Lai - Hùng Ròm, 127 Trường Chinh. It opens at 5:30 am and closes at 9:30 pm. A bowl with rare beef costs about 40,000 to 45,000 VND, and a fried breadstick adds 5,000 VND (June and July 2026). If you are not sure how to eat it, ask the owner to show you, or do it yourself: put the sauce in the bowl, stir well, then add chilli satay. It is also sold as “two-bowl pho”, noodles and broth served apart. More shops and how to order are in dry pho in Gia Lai.
Then take a Grab to the pagoda and arrive as the gate opens at 7 am, when the light is soft and few people are about. From the courtyard you look up at a nine-storey stupa 70 m tall. Dress modestly to go in. The route, the architecture and where to stop are covered in Minh Thành Pagoda.
Local tip: the pagoda closes at 5 pm, so do not leave it for late afternoon if you want to reach the main hall.
Day one late morning: grilled pork rolls before the lunch rush
From the pagoda, head back towards the centre for an early lunch at Bún Phương, 46 Nguyễn Thái Học, open 8:30 am to 9:30 pm. Order nem nướng (grilled pork rolls), bún thịt nướng (noodles with grilled pork) or bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls). One portion of nem fills one person, and a solo diner does well with one noodle dish and one bánh cuốn. Tables are still free around 10 am, so come then if you want a seat without waiting. Other breakfast and lunch places around Nguyễn Thái Học are in breakfast in Pleiku.
Day one afternoon: Plei Ốp village and a coffee

In the afternoon, go to Plei Ốp village, a Jrai (J’rai) community village next to Great Unity Square. It runs cultural tours for visitors, so you can see the communal house and the yard with 54 wooden statues of the Jrai and Bahnar peoples, and try a craft rather than just look and leave. Village food includes grilled chicken with bamboo-tube rice, sun-dried beef with yellow ant salt, and stream fish grilled in bamboo.
Bring a little cash, and do not touch the ritual pole, the gongs or the rice-wine jars on your own. If you are offered rice wine, take a small sip rather than refusing outright. More in Plei Ốp village.
Afterwards, rest at The Quao, by the Hội Phú stream, open 6:30 am to 10 pm; its many plants suit a rainy day. Other cafés are in coffee in Pleiku.
Day one evening: the square and the night street
The square is ringed by museums, and on Saturday evenings from March to December 2026 gongs are played there from 7 to 9 pm. For dinner, the Chợ Nhỏ (“Small Market”) night street is open 6 pm to midnight daily, with about 51 stalls planned along the Hội Phú stream; park on Anh Hùng Núp street, beside the square. The street is new, so walk one lap and pick the stalls you like.
If you are not driving, a pilot four-wheel electric cart runs from 5:30 pm to midnight daily: line 1 links the square, Minh Thành Pagoda and the Hội Phú stream embankment, and line 2 links the square and Plei Ốp village. They start too late for the pagoda, so keep them for the evening. Great Unity Square has more on each attraction.
Day two: the tea hills and Biển Hồ Lake
Day two goes north, and the mist sets the order. The tea hills are best while the mist is thick, so do them first and the lake second.
Our pick: if you want to start day two at first light, stay the night before at Pleiku Adventures Homestay, in the coffee hills beside Biển Hồ Lake. Brad, the Australian owner who lives in Pleiku, speaks English and can arrange bike rides and the trip out to the volcano for day three.
Day two morning: mist over the tea, then down to the lake

Set out while it is still dark. Biển Hồ Chè (the tea hills) is open 24 hours a day. From the centre, take Highway 14 towards Kon Tum, turn right onto Lê Văn Sỹ street, then left over the Nghĩa Hưng spillway to the pine-lined road; the tea is on the right of the pines. It is a working tea farm kept as part of the landscape for visitors, so do not pick the leaves.
Then go down to Biển Hồ Lake. It is about 7 km from the centre on Highway 14; from the Biển Hồ crossroads, turn onto Tôn Đức Thắng street for about 2 km more. Entry is 10,000 VND for adults and 5,000 VND for children over 1.2 m; younger children are free (June 2026). From the entrance arch to the water is almost 1 km, and an electric cart carries up to 10 people for 10,000 VND each per trip, about 5 minutes. For the way back, buy a cart ticket at the end of the road or walk along the pines. The lake sits in the crater of an extinct volcano and is a natural freshwater lake; the road ends at a stall of handmade souvenirs.

Past the tea hills, the hundred-year-old pine row leads on to Bửu Minh Pagoda, more than 15 km north of the centre; skip it if you want to be back for lunch. More in Biển Hồ Lake and Biển Hồ Chè.
Book a Grab for the tea hills, and check the weather the night before.
Day two lunch: another dry pho, at the shop that closes latest
Yes, a second dry pho: the shops open early and close early, which suits a lunch after a dawn start. Phở khô Minh stops at noon and Nhớ Phố Núi at 12:45 pm, while Hồng is open 5 am to 2 pm. Go to Hồng, at 22-24 Nguyễn Văn Trỗi, for exactly that reason; a bowl with rare beef is about 55,000 VND (October 2026). Phở khô Minh runs about 35,000 to 45,000 VND (October 2026). Nhớ Phố Núi, at 10 Nguyễn Tất Thành, sells dry pho gift packs to take home.
Day two afternoon: sitting down for coffee
After an early start, slow down. Ngày Bình Yên, at 113C Tô Vĩnh Diện, is open 6:30 am to 10 pm and has a third-floor terrace over the fields. Order something simple and skip the matcha and unusual milk teas. For coffee to take home, Cafe Thu Hà, 09 Nguyễn Thái Học, open until 9 pm, sells beans, ground coffee and filters.
Day two evening: the night market
For the evening, head to Chợ Đêm Pleiku (the night market), 40 Nguyễn Thiện Thuật, Diên Hồng ward, open 6 pm to 2 am daily. Look for lụi (grilled pork on lemongrass sticks), cơm hến (baby-clam rice), southern-style bún mắm, fruit bowls and grilled rice paper. Snacks run about 20,000 to 50,000 VND, two-bowl pho about 30,000 to 50,000 VND, and a durian-and-coconut-milk fruit bowl 50,000 VND (September 2026). The public toilet charges 3,000 VND. More late-night places are in eating at night in Pleiku.
Day three: Chư Đăng Ya volcano
Day three has one target. Chư Đăng Ya volcano is north-east of the centre, far enough that you should not add another stop that morning.
Day three morning: up the crater

The volcano is open every day from 4:30 am to 6 pm, so you can leave as the sky is just brightening. Phở khô Hồng opens at 5 am, and Phở Nữ at 5:30 am, so a quick bowl on the way north is easy; if you have had enough pho, Phở Nữ is the other early option. The climb is about 400 m, steep and hard going, so wear shoes with good grip and bring water and a hat.
You have no motorbike, so settle the ride the day before. There are three ways. Book a taxi or GrabCar in town for the half day, and agree the fare before you set off. Take the pilot electric-cart line 3, which goes to Biển Hồ Lake, the hundred-year-old pines and Chư Đăng Ya, from 8 am to 6 pm with up to 10 people per cart; it starts too late for the early mist, so it suits a relaxed day better. Or ask Brad at the homestay (see day two) to arrange the trip out. The mountain is sacred to the Jrai people, so ask before photographing people and do not step into the fields beside the road. The trip changes a lot with the flower season; Chư Đăng Ya volcano helps you pick a month.
Local tip: eat in town before you climb and carry water; there is little on the way out.
Day three midday: back in town
Back in town at midday, stop at Nhớ Phố Núi before 12:45 pm for a dry pho gift pack; later than that, Hùng Ròm is open until 9:30 pm. Rest and pack, or buy coffee beans at Thu Hà. Day three is often a flight or coach day, so the notes below help with timing.
Changing the plan by season
Wild sunflower season, late October to early November
Wild sunflowers (dã quỳ) usually bloom in late October and early November and peak for about two to three weeks. That is when the volcano turns yellow, and the blooms signal the start of the dry and festival season. In 2026 the Gong Festival, Wild Sunflower Week and Chư Đăng Ya Volcano event is planned for 30 October to 8 November. From 30 October to 1 November, activities centre on Ia Gri village, near the volcano; from 6 to 8 November they move to Great Unity Square, the Pleiku Museum and central streets, with an international gong night planned for the evening of 7 November.
If you travel between 30 October and 1 November, move day three to the start, so the volcano coincides with the Ia Gri events. If you come in the week of 6 to 8 November, put day one on 7 November so you are at the square that night. These dates are still a plan, so recheck them before you go. More detail is in festivals in Gia Lai through the year, the Gia Lai gongs and Pleiku’s sunflower season.
Rainy season, May to October

In the rainy season, give outdoor plans more slack. Take a Grab to the tea hills in case the road is wet, and put covered stops in the afternoon, such as Minh Thành Pagoda, open until 5 pm, and The Quao, whose many plants suit a wet day. Do not cut the schedule fine, because Gia Lai sometimes has fog or sudden showers early in the morning and late afternoon. In return, from July to October the volcano is covered in the red of canna flowers.
Dry season, November to April
In the dry season the order above works as it is, and the sunflower bloom at the start of the season is the highlight.
Getting in: by plane or by coach
How you arrive decides when day one starts.
Landing at Pleiku airport

The airport is on 17/3 street, Thống Nhất ward, about 5-6 km from the centre, 10-15 minutes by car or taxi. Fares start from 1,454,000 VND from Hanoi and 1,007,000 VND from Ho Chi Minh City, before tax and fees (seen 24 October 2026). Arrive 90-120 minutes before your flight.

Into town, hotels can arrange pick-up if you book ahead. A taxi suits groups or heavy luggage, and a motorbike taxi (xe ôm) runs about 7,000 to 10,000 VND per km (October 2026). Xanh SM offers airport transfers, and two taxi firms are allowed to pick up at the airport, Mai Linh and Sun Taxi. If you land in the morning, start day one with dry pho; if you land in the afternoon, check in, go straight to Plei Ốp village and spend the evening at the square. More airport detail is in Pleiku airport.
Stepping off at Đức Long bus station

Đức Long is Pleiku’s long-distance bus station, where overnight coaches pull in around dawn. From the yard, get into town by Grab or taxi. Coach fares from October 2026: Pleiku to Quy Nhơn costs from 160,000 VND with one company, 164 km in 3 hours 35 minutes, and 200,000 VND with another, 175 km in 3 hours 45 minutes. Ho Chi Minh City is 350,000 or 500,000 VND. The Ho Chi Minh City coach leaves between 6 pm and 8:15 pm and covers 488 km in 10 hours 40 minutes, so a night coach reaches Pleiku in the early hours. In that case, swap day two to the front: eat at Hồng, which opens at 5 am, then go early to the tea hills.

Local tip: if you book through social media, match the phone number against the coach company’s own hotline, because a fake Facebook page has been copying Tuấn Anh coaches, whose office is at 180 Lê Duẩn. More is in coaches to Pleiku.
Getting between stops without your own vehicle
Taxis and ride-hailing cover the legs inside town. Xanh SM charges 20,000 VND for the first 2 km (October 2026). A four-seat GrabCar in Gia Lai is 27,000 VND for the first 2 km, then 10,800 VND per km; GrabBike is 12,273 VND for the first 2 km, then 4,222 VND per km (Grab price list updated 8 July 2026). Check the fare before you ride. Fares by company and how to book are in taxis and ride-hailing in Pleiku.
If you have more days
With more than three days, a few directions combine well. For water and forest, try Phú Cường waterfall and the falls near Pleiku; for places Pleiku people go at weekends, see pine hills, Hàm Rồng and Đồng Xanh. Give a half day to gongs, communal houses and museums or the Pleiku prison and war relics. Heading further north, Kon Tum and Măng Đen works as a day trip. To pick a month, see Pleiku weather month by month; if you travel with foreign friends, send them Pleiku for foreign visitors, and for more places beyond this plan, browse things to do.
What to check before you go
Recheck the 2026 festival dates on the Biển Hồ commune page and the festival announcement. Night street hours are on the Pleiku ward page, and how to mix dry pho is on the Gia Lai specialties page.
