Pleiku for foreign visitors
Practical Pleiku for visitors from abroad: coach confirmation calls, motorbike licences, hotel passport check-in, SIM cards, ATM fees and emergency numbers.
By the Xin chào Pleiku editorsRechecked

The easiest place to lose a day in Pleiku is the coach: the company may phone to confirm before pickup, and without a Vietnamese SIM that call never reaches you, so the risk is yours. Be at the pickup point 30 minutes early, hand over your original passport at check-in and buy a SIM at a carrier shop.

Coach: the confirmation call that never reaches you

The easiest way to lose a day in Pleiku is a coach booking. Some operators phone the number you registered to confirm your seat, others never do. With no Vietnamese SIM that call simply does not arrive, and if the coach leaves without you, the loss is yours. So enter your number correctly and keep the phone on.
The pickup point is the second trap: the stop you pick on a booking site is not always where the coach really halts. We recommend the operator’s own office or ticket counter, 30 minutes before departure, with the confirmation message or email ready. If the company only communicates by phone, ask your hotel reception or host to take the call on their Vietnamese number.
Tip: Call the operator once the day before (reception can do it for you) and ask for your ticket code and pickup point by message or email. Companies, fares and the Đức Long station are on the Pleiku coach page.
Renting a motorbike: two licences, a helmet, a few checkpoints
If you want to ride out to Biển Hồ Lake yourself, the first question is not which bike but which licence. Carry your national licence and an international permit together, both still valid, and the permit must come from a country that signed the 1968 Vienna Convention. A permit issued by Vietnam itself does not count. The permit alone, without your national licence, still earns a fine of 2,000,000 to 4,000,000 VND on a bike up to 125 cc; no fastened helmet is 400,000 to 600,000 VND (fines under Decree 168/2024/NĐ-CP).
At the rental shop you show your licence plus your passport or a return flight ticket. With a flight or coach ticket in and out of Pleiku, some shops waive the deposit.
Checks do happen. Gia Lai traffic police stop riders without a licence or helmet, and during Tết alcohol checkpoints stood on Lê Duẩn street, mostly between 10 am and 2 pm and between 7 and 11 pm. Keep your licence and the bike’s registration in the under-seat box, and never ride after drinking.
Rental prices, airport delivery and the road to Biển Hồ and Chư Đăng Ya are on the motorbike rental page.
Without a motorbike: walk the centre, take Grab for the rest
Pleiku looks walkable on a map and is not. Biển Hồ Lake is about 7 km from the centre along Highway 14, the tea-plantation side of the lake is more than 15 km north, and the Chư Đăng Ya volcano is about 30 km north-east. Walking works around Great Unity Square (Đại Đoàn Kết) and the central streets; the rest would take a whole day along the road verge.
So book Grab one leg at a time; Gia Lai has GrabCar (four- and six-seat) and GrabBike. For far spots like the volcano, agree a pickup time with your driver before he leaves you, because passing cars are rare out of town. If one of you can ride, renting a motorbike is still the cheapest option.
Who to ask when there is no tourist desk
There is no tourist information desk for walk-in visitors, and most staff in town hotels, cafés and bars do not speak English. The provincial tourism contact is at 03 Cách Mạng Tháng Tám, Pleiku ward: phone 02693.827.159, email phongttxtdlgialai@gmail.com. An email before you arrive works better than turning up.
For a place to stay with English at reception, Mường Thanh Grand Gia Lai and Cao Nguyen Hotel list English-speaking staff, and To Ho Chill Homestay & Cafe has reception in English and Vietnamese. Send a short message in English before you book to be sure.
Our pick: Pleiku Adventures Homestay next to Biển Hồ Lake. Brad, who is Australian and lives in Pleiku, runs it and speaks English, so you can ask him anything about the area.
Hotels: hand over your passport at check-in
At check-in the front desk asks for your passport first. By law the host files your stay with the ward or commune police and must see your passport or an equivalent travel document before accepting you. That covers guesthouses and rented houses and flats too, not only hotels. The filing includes your full name, nationality, passport number and planned length of stay.
Tip: Keep your original passport in your day bag at check-in, not at the bottom of your suitcase. Areas and prices are on the where to stay page.
SIM and data: go to a carrier shop with your passport
If you land and want data straight away, a SIM is harder than you expect, because it must be registered to you. The carrier checks your face against the national immigration database, in person at its own shop or an authorised one with a known address, and your passport must cover your permitted stay. In short: take your original passport to a carrier shop.
Viettel’s 30-day plan 5G150T costs 150,000 VND for 5GB a day, and 5G180H costs 180,000 VND with 30 minutes of calls to Viettel numbers and 15 minutes to other networks. The SIM card itself costs extra. Buy at the airport counter, a Viettel shop or an authorised dealer. Bring the original passport, since a digital copy is not accepted, and an unlocked phone. Staff photograph your passport and take your portrait on the spot. Cash, Visa, Mastercard and VNPay or VietQR codes all work. Prices are from October 2026.
Cash, cards and ATMs
Taxi companies, coach operators and SIM shops mostly take cards or QR. Xanh SM takes cash, the Xanh electronic card and the MoMo, ZaloPay and ShopeePay wallets. Đức Đạt, the coach company to Đà Nẵng and Ho Chi Minh City, takes international credit and debit cards.
Cash machines are different. A Visa or Mastercard issued abroad pays 4% of the amount at an Agribank ATM, with a minimum of 70,000 VND per withdrawal (fee schedule seen October 2026). One larger withdrawal for several days therefore costs less than many small ones, so take your cash before you leave the town centre.
Grab, taxi and the airport

The airport is about 5 to 6 km from the centre, 10 to 15 minutes by car, and a taxi is the easiest way in if you are in a group or have luggage. In town, the first 2 km cost 16,000 VND with Let’s Go Taxi and 20,000 VND with Xanh SM; a four-seat GrabCar is 27,000 VND, then 10,800 VND per extra km (Grab price list of 8 July 2026, taxi fares seen October 2026). If you prefer to phone, Mai Linh is on 1055 and Xanh SM on 1555, but without Vietnamese you will do better booking through the app.
Fares per company and the road in are on the taxi and ride-hailing page and the Pleiku airport page.

History: Minh Thành Pagoda is lovely but new
Almost every list starts with Minh Thành Pagoda. It dates from 1964 but was rebuilt and expanded in 1997, so most of what you see is recent, with Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese influences. Stop for photos if you pass; for the story of the region, spend your time on these instead.
- Pleiku Prison (Nhà lao Pleiku): built by the French in 1925 and now a national historic site. The prison and other wartime sites are covered in war relics in Pleiku.
- Plei Ốp village: a Jrai village inside the city, whose communal house keeps its original traditional look, with jars and old gongs. Read the Plei Ốp village page first.
- Gongs: if your dates match, the Gia Lai Gong Festival 2026 is when villages perform most openly; otherwise read about Gia Lai gongs.
Ordering food without Vietnamese
Show this table to the server or point at the dish name.
| Dish | What it is |
|---|---|
| Phở khô | Dry noodles with a bowl of broth on the side, a Gia Lai breakfast |
| Gà nướng cơm lam | Grilled chicken with sticky rice cooked in bamboo |
| Bún cua thối | Fermented crab noodle soup, a strong taste for the curious |
| Muối kiến vàng | Salt made with golden ants, a dip for grilled meat and a gift to take home |
| Bò một nắng | Beef dried for one day in the sun, eaten with the salt above |
Two phrases: “Không cay” means no chilli, and “Cho tôi một phần” means one portion for me. Places and prices are on the Gia Lai dry-noodle page and the Pleiku specialities page.
Emergency numbers: 113, 114, 115
Three numbers cover the night-time emergencies: 113 for police and public-order problems, 114 for fire, which reaches the fire and rescue police, and 115 for a medical emergency, linked to the emergency centre for transport or first aid. Calls from landlines and mobiles are free. Since 23 August 2025 there is also the national emergency line 112; it is free as well, and anything that belongs to 113, 114 or 115 is passed on to those lines.
Tip: Save 113, 114 and 115 in your phone before the trip; the calls are free.
